Edgemont voters are proposing two propositions.  You are invited to support one or both.

Proposition 1: Study potential improvements to class sizes

The Edgemont School District should conduct an internal study to evaluate the potential benefits and logistical considerations of reducing class sizes in grades K–6 to meet and/or exceed New York City’s evidence-based standards (20 students for K–3 and 23 for grades 4–6).

This study would be performed by existing administrative staff and would not require additional funding. It would assess how smaller class sizes could enhance personalized learning, strengthen social-emotional support, and promote equity—directly advancing the district’s strategic goals of academic rigor and holistic student development.

By analyzing both educational outcomes and practical implementation strategies, the study would provide data to inform future decisions while engaging stakeholders through community forums and the district’s Panorama dashboard. This initiative ensures Edgemont remains at the forefront of best practices without immediate financial commitment.

Proposition 2: Overnight School Trips

The district should restore three beloved overnight trips, 5th grade Philadelphia, 6th Grade Camp, and 9th Grade Camp, to reinforce resilience, leadership, and community bonding, all pillars of the Profile of an Edgemont Graduate. Historically funded primarily by parents and donors, these trips would require minimal district investment (under $120,000 annually) while offering outsized benefits: experiential learning, social-emotional growth, and lifelong memories.

These trips align with the strategic plan’s focus on real-world readiness and character development, making them not just enriching extras but essential components of an Edgemont education. By reviving these traditions, the district can reignite student engagement and strengthen its commitment to holistic development.
